NEWS & SPECIAL EVENTS

Age UK Islington's Support Available at New Partner Venues!

We're delighted to announce that from September 2022, we'll be available for 'drop-ins' at new partner venues! If you need advice & guidance, you can either have an initial chat with our Helpline or with one of our staff at a 'drop-in'. Where appropriate, we can then book follow-on appointments with the relevant members of our team, including Islington Carers Hub.

World Alzheimers Awareness Month

Every September for World Alzheimers Awareness Month people come together from all around the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around dementia. As part of our Islington Carers Hub Support Group this month, we've invited guest speaker, Dementia Friend Ambassador Jeanne Pring to give a 'Dementia Friends' talk. We've also compiled a list of activities taking place in Islington in September (and regularly) for both people with dementia and their carers.

Getting a Break from Caring

We all need to take a break from caring from time to time. A quiet hour, a regular weekly slot, a day off, an undisturbed night's sleep, a weekend away or a whole week, or even two on holiday. Our partner Mobilise have produced a very useful 'Carers Guide to Respite' with solutions that carers have found that work and organisations that can help. You might also want to recall the experience of ICH carer Sue, who not so long ago enjoyed a Carefree Break.

Let's Talk Peer Event Wed 21 Sept, 10.30am-12.30pm (Zoom)

Don't forget that our Let's Talk Peer Event provides information about financial support that is available, every month. In September's Let's Talk session, we will be joined by guest speakers including experts from the Money & Pensions Service.  If you are of state pensionable age, make sure you know about pensions credit - too many people who are eligible for this do not claim it, yet it can open a gateway to further financial support.

Help reduce stress, anxiety and maintain flexibility! Join us online to learn about yoga, mindfulness, and wellness. Come take a moment to breathe, relax, and take some time for yourself. In this class, we will be focusing on gentle flexibility to help keep our bodies healthy and bringing our awareness back to our breath through yoga. For more information & to get the Zoom link to join, click below.

Sadlers Wells 'Preview' Performance

Friday 9th September, 3.45 - 5.45pm, Peacock Theatre, WC2A

Instead of our usual Park Theatre matinee, this month we're able to bring you a free 'preview' of a Sadler's Wells performance. For almost 50 years, the all-male comedy ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (The Trocks) have been delighting audiences. Step into the auditorium to watch behind the scenes as the 16 dancers and rehearsal staff of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo prepare for a performance.

Future Matters September events

Tues 20th, 2 - 3.30pm, Friday 23rd, 10am - 12noon

On Tuesday 20 September afternoon, you can get a really useful Introduction to Lasting Powers of Attorney & Will Preparation online. No matter how much you own, everyone should have a Will and making sure that you and other family members have a Lasting Powers of Attorney in place can remove a lot of stress and worry.

If you've never taken part in a Future Matters Café, now's your chance! The next one on Friday 23 September is going to be hosted in-person at the Almeida Theatre Café, N1. Conversation is always interesting and can range from the practical to the philosophical aspects of end of life.

NETWORK EVENTS & PROJECTS

Learning Opportunities, Courses & Enrolment Days

It's nearing the end of the summer and moving into one of the most productive times of year! Why not take the opportunity to learn something new? There's loads of really fantastic courses in Islington, whether you're 18yrs or 81yrs!

City and Islington have a wide range of courses including some excellent courses that you can apply to do completely free. Similarly with Adult Community Learning courses.

Improve your English or your confidence with digital devices, or get a grounding in Health & Socialcare. There's something for everyone and both organisations have enrolment days coming up - some City & Islington College enrolment days take place in late August and go on until 2 September. Adult Community Learning enrolment days are 7 to 9 September. You can discover what's taking place and have an informal chat about what you might like to do.

Princes Trust have support and lots of opportunities coming up in September for 16 to 30 year olds, from programmes for digital marketing, cyber security, making it in media, retail, NHS, Marvel and many more.  See their latest update here.

For those who are interested in tech, INCO is providing a 16 week part-time online Google IT Support Certificate Scholarship Program. There is an Application Form here.

Golden Grant Maker

Islington Giving is looking for 8 local older residents (we are likely to prioritise people over 65 but any resident over the age of 55 can apply) to come together to make decisions about how a minimum of £110,000 of Islington Giving’s grants budget can be spent to support local groups to provide more opportunities for older people to come together, have fun, build connections and tackle isolation.
