NEWS

Anna, 39 yrs old, Found a Turning Point

"I was trying to look for a job, but I couldn't find anything and I was extremely depressed and anxious. I had panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, and slipped into a black hole".

After speaking to her GP, Anna began to receive medical treatment for her depression and was referred to Age UK Islington. Just one week later, Anna received a call from Zlatina, one of Age UK Islington’s social prescribers.

"My social prescriber, Zlatina, was compassionate...., but at the same time she was extremely powerful! After learning about my interests, she introduced me to new opportunities and convinced me to give them a try. This was the turning point for me..."

Islington Carers Hub is a service delivered by Age UK Islington and can provide Carers with tailored support to help them cope in their caring role. For Anna's full story, click below.

Connecting to Islington Autism Hub

We spoke to Jill Bradford, Volunteer & Activities Coordinator, from Islington Autism Hub to talk about the challenges of caring for someone with 'high functioning autism'.

Caring for an autistic person can mean long, often mentally and physically exhausting days, particularly where the autistic person is really frustrated and perhaps having melt-downs” says Jill Bradford, for Autism Hub Islington. Times of transition, e.g. from education to the world of work can be particularly difficult.

Find out more about the services of the Autism Hub and share your thoughts about caring for someone with 'high functioning autism' when it comes to helping them get into employment. The Autism Hub will be hosting a FREE Employment Webinar on Tues 7th September, 7 – 8.30pm which you're invited to attend.

Bringing the Generations Together Through Puppetry

During the pandemic, many older people were unable to see friends and family, and a lot of people felt really isolated. As part of our activities programme, Age UK Islington came together with Little Angel Theatre for a joint puppetry project. This was designed to give older and younger people an opportunity to share an experience together, despite not being able to physically meet.

Little Angel hosted a series of three online workshops for older clients, which took place once a week. During these sessions, they made shadow puppets and scenery to accompany stories that were brought to life in final online performances. Younger family members were invited to watch. The results were captivating! Click below to see the video!

TV Licences for over 75s

Join us for the next online Let's Talk Peer Support Group session, Wednesday 4th August, 10.30am - 12pm, when we're going to be joined by Daniel Cooper, BBC /TV Licencing, for a presentation about the changes to the TV Licence for the over 75s.

In August 2020, there was a policy change to the TV Licence for those over 75 and free licences were no longer funded by the government from this date. However, anyone aged 75 or over and receiving Pension Credit is now eligible to apply for a free TV Licence.

Why Buy When You Can Borrow?

There's a new 'Library of Things' in Finsbury Park, which has been introduced by Islington Council in partnership with Bright Sparks. This new Library can help you save money and reduce waste by affordably renting out useful 'Things' like drills, sound systems and sewing machines from local spaces. You can also learn skills like DIY and repair. If you have a job or project in mind or fancy doing a fun activity, you can visit the website to reserve the 'Thing' you need. You then simply return it, ready for another neighbour to use, when you've finished.

Cally Park 'What's on in August'

There’s lots going on in August in Cally Park! Stretch your legs and learn more about the park on one of their regular FREE ‘Health & History Walks’ with an experienced and knowledgeable Islington Guide.
