How are you? We'd like to share our latest news from everyone at Islington Carers Hub.
Ideas for keeping happy & healthy
1) Are you aware of your rights?
Thursday 26th November, 10am - 5pm
We delighted that many of you have booked for our special online Carers Rights Day information sessions on Thursday 26th November. It's not too late if you haven't! You can click on the image above to hear a special invite to Islington carers from Islington Mayor.
Whether you are a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, it’s important that you understand your rights as a carer and are able to access the support that is available to you as soon as you need it.
There are six free hourly sessions that you can book for, delivered by Islington partners. Book the individual session(s) that you're most interested in, or for all of them, as you choose.
Lots of us experience stress and anxiety in life, but too often don't think about taking steps to help reduce it. Practicing "Mindfulness" can improve physical and mental health, e.g. improving sleep, relieving chronic pain, improving relationships and much more.
Now's the chance to book for a structured 8 week free course, from the Stress Project, delivered by Holloway Neighbourhood Group. Click for more information and to book. There is a new course starting from 27th January, as the earlier one is fully booked.
Why not try our online yoga class as an idea for keeping active?
Last week there was national diabetes awareness day. Diabetes is something that affects lots of people in the UK, with around 700 people diagnosed with the condition every day.
The NHS website says that keeping active is one of the small changes you can make to prevent diabetes from developing. For more information about our online yoga class and how to book, please click below.
Join us to talk about anything and everything that's to do with Islington - whether it's something you're having difficulties with or something you've discovered that you want to share. Drop in for a short time, or the whole session.
This month we have a presentation from a SHINE Energy Advisor; a peer with experience of Personal Independence Payment will share his experiences, and we'll also hear from Claremont about their Activities Project. There'll be lots of opportunity to ask questions and to talk (or just listen)!
2) Take control of your health & financial affairs with an LPA
Thursday 26th November, 4 - 5pm
Setting up a Lasting Powers of Attorney (“LPA”) may sound complicated, but it is a simple way of protecting your health, your finances, and the people you trust. It can also save families a lot of stress and heartache.
Get an introduction to Lasting Powers of Attorney: why it's important to have one, and how we can help you to put one in place quickly and easily, at the Future Matters online workshop on Thursday. You'll need to book beforehand!
Book some support with one of our friendly, knowledgeable Tech Break volunteers! They can either talk you through how to do something by landline or by a Zoom meeting, whichever's best for you.
You can use the session to try out Zoom to make sure you're ready and prepared to join any online festive activities. Or try booking an online supermarket delivery for the first time. Your Tech Break volunteer can help with all of these things, or with anything else that you're finding tricky!
If you've been advised to stay home, or can't leave your home for another reason, there's lots of ways in which you can get shopping or other essential supplies delivered.
Please see our updated Age UK Islington guide to "Getting Shopping online & by phone" including local sources of help.
5) Interested in getting involved in a community project group?
The Nefertiti women’s community project aims to empower and motivate Black, Asian, minority ethnic, refugee and migrant women to gain confidence, reduce feelings of isolation, and set up projects to strengthen their local communities.
It is FREE to join Nefertiti. You can join one of three project groups that will meet twice a month, usually at weekends or in the evenings until March: 1) literacy, digital learning, and training opportunities 2) parenting skills, nutrition and exercise; 3) employment and self-employment. Nefertiti will provide regular online workshops, a personal mentor and will also help you build strong links with a range of local community groups, adult education & colleges.
Are you worried about other things? You can call to talk to us about anything that you are concerned about. This might be if you're feeling low, for bereavement support, or about housing or money worries.....

PS. Have you booked your flu jab?
Don't forget to contact your GP or pharmacy to book your flu jab - people who are eligible include those who are 65 and over, have certain health conditions, receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick, live with someone who's at high risk from coronavirus (on the 'shielded' list). Also if you're aged 50 to 64, with priority to those who have a health condition. More information is here.
