Dear Islington Carer,

World Alzheimers Awareness Month

Every September for World Alzheimers Awareness Month, people come together from all around the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around dementia. One in three of us born in the UK today will go onto develop dementia in our lifetime. By raising awareness about dementia, through various events across the UK including Islington, it is hoped more people will be diagnosed earlier, giving more time for them to come to terms with future symptoms.

We have partnered up with Dementia Friendly Islington so we can share a calendar of dementia-friendly events happening throughout September.  There's lots going on across Islington - so whether you're a carer for someone who is living with dementia or someone who wants to know more about the condition, there's lots to dip into!

Dementia-Friends Information Sessions

Learn more about dementia and book one of four weekly information sessions taking place on Thursdays in September at 1pm! Organised by the Alzheimer’s Society and hosted by Volunteer Dementia Champions, the sessions are designed to give an introduction to dementia and how it affects people. Islington Carers Hub will also be providing a short presentation about their support for carers.

By attending the session, this will give you the knowledge to be a Dementia Friend. A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns about dementia so they can help their community. Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.

Dementia-Friendly Arts Appreciation Session

Our "Moments of Calm" Arts Appreciation Session will be taking place on Thursday 16th September, 2 - 3pm on Zoom. In recognition of the importance of music in dementia-care, this is a special edition of our Arts Appreciation events for anyone with an interest in classical music, including people living with dementia and their carers.  Join us for an exploration of ways in which composers use moments of silence to punctuate and intensify their music. This free session will include musical excerpts and lively conversation.
