With the Queen's Platinum Jubilee coming up this week and our Let's Get Back Together week (20-24 June), we have lots to celebrate as part of our June newsletter! 

 

NEWS & SPECIAL EVENTS

 

You're Invited to Book for Let's Get Back Together Events

 

 

Bookings are now open for the Let's Get Back Together week events (20-24 June), and we're looking forward to seeing you! From Esther Rantzen's 82nd Birthday with Jubilee Celebration (a special edition of Let's Talk), to getting creative at the Museum of London with Bunting Making and a Stadium Tour at Arsenal. There's free food and refreshments at each event.

Let's Talk Special Edition: Dame Esther Rantzen's Birthday, Wed 22 June, 10.30am - 1pm

 

 

We're honoured to be joined by Dame Esther Rantzen for a special edition of Let's Talk on Wednesday 22 June, 10.30am. It's Dame Esther's 82nd birthday and she is going to be chatting to Let's Talk peers about her personal and professional life and work. We'll also be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with party food & music and hearing from Dr Lucy Pollock - NHS Consultant Geriatrician and author of The Book About Getting Older.

Windrush Celebration Day, Wed 22 June, 11am & 12noon

 

Want to know more about Windrush, the ship that brought some of the first post-war migrants from the Caribbean to Britain? Were you or your relatives part of the Windrush generation of Commonwealth citizens who came to live in Britain between 1948 and 1971? Age UK Islington was part of a winning local group of organisations who won funding to host two of a series of events to mark this year's Windrush Day.


You are invited to a special edition of our Reminiscence session and a Windrush Picnic in Caledonian Park!  The picnic will have free Caribbean-inspired food and refreshments. Click below for more information and to book!

 

 

Intergenerational Celebration Event, Sat 18 June, 10.30am

Highbury Fields Bandstand, N5 1QL

 

Join us and other partner organisations for a Summer Celebration with all the generations. We have an enjoyable range of activities for all ages including walks, craft activities, story-telling and singing. Lunch and refreshments provided. Toilet facilities are located within the main park. This event will be outdoors so please dress for the weather.

Park Theatre Get Together & Show, Thursday 9 June, 2pm

 

Our much loved Park Theatre shows continue, for Age UK Islington clients. The matinee 'pay-what-you-can' performance on 9th June is "The Still Room". Booking with Age UK Islington is essential and tickets will be on a "first-come-first-served basis"! Start with tea or coffee and a chat in a reserved area on the 2nd floor (Park Pizza) and then make your way to the performance which starts at 3.15pm.

 

Take a Tech Break, Thursday 9 June, 12 - 1pm

 

 

Join us on Thurs 9th June at 12noon by Zoom for a digital support session on Zoom about "Getting more from your smartphone". There's also a session on Thurs 30 June "Apps everyone should have in their smartphones". Jubilee Events Taking Place Locally, in London & on TV

 

Marking Her Majesty The Queen's 70 years of service, communities are coming together to celebrate over a four day UK bank holiday weekend. Throughout the weekend there is lots happening in Islington, in London and the BBC will be providing live television coverage.  It's a great opportunity to get together with others to commemorate this unforgettable milestone!  For details of What's on locally, in London and on television, see our article by clicking the button below.

 

 

Islington Rock n' Roll Walk, Wed 8 June, 11am - 1pm

 

Mary Tyler, host of weekly Music Appreciation session, will be leading her second Rock n' Roll Walk, an Islington walk with a difference. Along the way, stops will include former homes of famous rock musicians and a host of popular music venues. The final stop will be the Euphorium Bakery for a post-walk coffee!


 

Park Walks, Thurs 9, Thurs 23, Friday 24 June all at 11am

 

Taking a walk in the local parks is a great way to get some gentle exercise and to meet other local people.  See the Health & History Walk on Thurs 9 June at 11am and Health & Wellbeing Walk (Dementia-Friendly) on Friday 24 June at 11am. The button below links to other activities in Cally Park.


Also, you might like to know that on Thursday 23rd June, Healthy Minds, Healthy Bods is doing an intro to their regular weekly walk in Clissold Park. Leaving from the Highbury Grange Medical Practice at 11am - 12.30pm (no need to book).

 

 

Carers Week (6-12 June)

 

Do you or anyone you know look after a partner, friend or family member?  If so, you might be personally interested or want to share details of our upcoming Carers Week events.  Designed to bring together Islington unpaid carers, there's lots going on!  We've meditation, line dancing, men's group, yoga and a picnic - all for Islington unpaid carers. Healthwatch Islington: Why Get Your Blood Pressure Measured and Where You Can Do This

 

One in five people in Islington have high blood pressure but only half know that they do. Left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart attack and stroke.
