Dear Islington Carer,

Newsletter #23 - October 29th

How are you?  Here's our latest news from Islington Carers Hub, with some ideas and info to hopefully lift your spirits on these chilly days!

Make sure you don't miss details about the Carers Rights Day on Thursday 26th November!!!

Ideas for keeping happy & healthy

1)  Book for Carers Rights Day!

Thurs 26th Nov, individual sessions 10am till 5pm

We do hope you can join us for a special online Carers Rights Day on Thursday 26th November.

Whether you are a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, it’s important that you understand your rights as a carer and are able to access the support that is available to you as soon as you need it.

We're going to be bringing Islington partners together to share information with you and other Islington carers, in a series of free sessions for this important day!

You can book the individual session(s) that you're most interested in, or for all of them, as you choose.

2)  Sometimes it's difficult to talk about end of life

Thursday 5th November, 3 - 4.30pm

People don't like talking about end of life, and it's usually something we all tend to avoid.  Our online Death Cafes, hosted by partner Gentle Dusk, are designed to try and take the taboo out the subject.

Death Cafes are friendly non-judgemental get-togethers designed to increase awareness of the importance of end of life care planning. They are informal discussion groups rather than grief support or counselling sessions.

Until recently, Death Cafes have been hosted at different venues in Islington, but they've also been working really well online.  The Zoom events give you the chance to join over a cuppa from home! They always give rise to a varied and thoughtful discussion.

Why not join us to see what they're all about?  Whether you drop in for 5 mins or for the full session, it would be great to see you!

Please click below to book - Gentle Dusk will then send you the Zoom link so you can join us on 5th November.

Skills & Know-how

1)  Book some help from a volunteer to get more from your phone or tablet!

Is your smartphone sitting in a box gathering cobwebs?! Use this Halloween as an opportunity to dust it off and to book some support with one of our friendly, knowledgeable Tech Break volunteers!

They can either talk you through how to do something by landline or by a Zoom meeting, whichever's best for you. Our next session is Thursday 5th November at midday, so don't you or a family member give it a try?

You could use the session to try out Zoom to make sure you're ready and prepared to join any online festive activities. Going into winter, it can be really helpful to be able to book a supermarket delivery online. Your Tech Break volunteer can help with all of these things, or with anything else that you're finding tricky!

2)  Keeping warm this winter

Make sure you’re prepared for winter and the colder weather that it can bring. As the temperature drops, the pressure of rising bills can be a real worry for many people, yet it's important to still keep warm.

There's lots of practical things that you can do to keep warm at home, and we'd like to share some tips and guidance. There's also discounts and financial support that you might be eligible for.

3)  Islington People Friendly Streets

The Council has introduced the Islington People Friendly Streets scheme in 5 areas of the borough. This is with the aim to help make it easier and safer to walk and cycle, be healthier and greener and allow social distancing now and in the future by preventing traffic from using residential streets as short cuts. The 5 areas are: Amwell, Canonbury West, Canonbury East, Clerkenwell Green, St. Peter's, and more are set to follow over the coming months. More details about the scheme is given on the Council's website - click here.

PS. Don't forget that carers are entitled to a free flub jab!

Don't forget to contact your GP or pharmacy to book your flu jab - people who are eligible include those who are 65 and over, have certain health conditions, receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick, live with someone who's at high risk from coronavirus (on the 'shielded' list). Also if you're aged 50 to 64, with priority to those who have a health condition. More information is here.
