Sharing resources from this month's Let's Talk event At our recent Let's Talk event, the Income Maximisation team explained the changes that the government is planning to make to disability benefits. This includes the new 'Right to Try' initiative which gives people the option to try out employment without the risk of losing welfare benefits if things don't work out.
Hillside Clubhouse and DWP Disability Employment Advisors gave talks on support available to help - whether building skills, confidence or getting into work. Speaking to Clara at the recent Let's Talk event, she gave an insight into her own health condition and it's challenges - as a younger person with a health condition, in the workplace, and trying to get an understanding of what to expect in the long term. However, she is optimistic about the next steps in her journey, partly as a result of having made contact with Hillside and the Disability Employment Advisors, following Let's Talk. Let’s Talk Peer Event: Community Safety & Scams Thursday 17 July, 10.30am-1.45pm Islington Council Community Space, 222 Upper St, N1 The monthly Let's Talk session is relaxed and social with plenty of time for discussion. We’d love to hear your views! This month, get practical tips on staying safe and keeping your belongings secure when out and about from Islington Council’s Community Safety Team. Hear from Trading Standards on how to spot and avoid scams whether they are online or in-person. Sobell Get Together Relaunch Party Tuesday 15 July, 10.30am - 1pm Sobell Leisure Centre, Hornsey Rd, N7 7NY The weekly Sobell Get Together is back downstairs - and better than ever! To celebrate the relaunch, we’ll be serving refreshments and party snacks from midday! Enjoy a relaxed, social game with others in the newly refurbished space, including short tennis, badminton, table tennis, indoor bowls or dominoes and a cuppa. Park Cuppa Special: Islington's Lost Waterways Wednesday 30 July, 11am - 12pm Cally Clock Tower Centre, Caledonian Park, N7 9HF We are looking forward to hearing a talk about Islington Museum's latest Undercurrent exhibition. It will explore the lost histories of three London waterways - the Walbrook, the Fleet, and Islington’s mineral wells and how they shaped the city. We will hear about stories of the people that used these once vital waterways, and discover why they are now hidden beneath Islington’s streets. Meet at 10.45am at Central Library, or at 11am at the Boer War Memorial (southern end of Highbury Fields, near Highbury and Islington station). No need to book. The Parent House 25th Birthday Party Thursday July,12-3pm The Parent House, 55 Calshot Street, N1 9AS The Parent House is celebrating their 25th Birthday. This free event will provide valuable information on reducing your risk of dementia, recognising early signs, and accessing local support services to assist yourself or any loved ones affected by dementia. No need to register, just drop in. The event will be followed by an Arsenal Football Club Stadium tour at 12pm Mildmay Community Connections Saturday 5 July,1-5pm Mildmay Community Centre, Woodville Road N16 8NA This event is all about strengthening local connections, reducing isolation, rebuilding trust and celebrating the diversity and resilience within the Mildmay community. Taking place in both the centre and garden space in front of the building, there will be local organisations hosting information stalls as well as free food, family activities and workshops. The Cally Festival Sunday 6 July,12noon–6pm Caledonian Road N1 This free, family-friendly street festival invites Londoners of all ages to dive into a vibrant celebration of community, culture, creativity and connection. Curated with heart and powered by local partnerships, The Cally Festival 2025 is set to be the biggest yet — featuring over ten immersive zones and stages, more than 70 market stalls, and a host of inspiring activities led by local organisations, artists and residents. Islington Dignity in Care Awards Deadline for Nominations Sunday 20 July Recognise the amazing dedication, care and compassion of those who make such a massive contribution to our community by nominating a colleague, family or unpaid carer, volunteer or anyone who has made a contribution to improving the lives of Islington. Make sure that you include details about why they deserve to be recognised. Nominators and nominees will be invited to attend the Dignity in Care event (Monday 22nd Sept), a fun celebration with food, drink, and music. Collage & Zines with Zoë Gardner Thursday 24 July, 8.45am-4pm Union Chapel, 19b Compton Terrace, N1 2UN This workshop is aimed particularly at those who are parents or other unpaid 24/7 carers, as rest may be a particularly rare experience. At the session, Zoë and participants explore why rest is so hard to find through embodied writing and making your own zine. To take part email stories@unionchapel.org.uk by 7 July 2025. Be sure to visit the link below to see the information needed in the booking email. Act Now to Keep Telecare Alarms Working Safely Do you or someone you know use a telecare alarm? Landline phones are switching to digital, which could stop telecare alarms working. This means that all landline providers need to know which of their customers use telecare, so they can keep them safe. The switchover is already happening, if you or someone you know uses a telecare alarm, call the landline provider now for support. The Elders Giving Back Awards The Serlin Family Foundation has launched The Elders Giving Back Awards to fund and support people over 60 who are leading socially-impactful projects or have brilliant new ideas for initiatives that can strengthen their communities. Elders can apply directly for an award to support their project, or you can nominate an elder doing great work. Black Health Hub Mondays from 10am-8pm Black Cultural Centre 16-18 Hornsey Road N7 7BP Come and join Go Africa’s Community Hub CIC at the Black Cultural Centre for the Black Health Club. The Black Health Club aims to provide a dedicated space for culturally competent healthcare services, that address disparities affecting Global Majority Black African and Caribbean Communities including race-based trauma, diabetes, sickle cell and prostate cancer and more. Positive Mental Health Through Music: Music Industry Mentoring Tuesdays 11am–4pm Islington MIND 48 Despard Rd, N19 5NW Experience free music production and recording studio sessions to promote positive mental health through creativity. The mentoring includes the opportunity to write and record in 1-1 studio sessions, learn about the music industry, create a digital release, open mic events, wellbeing network, volunteering opportunities.
