Changes to Winter Fuel Payment You might have heard the announcement in the press this week that there have been changes to those people who are eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help with heating costs during the colder months. The Government announced that, from this year onwards, to be eligible you must have been born on or before 22 September 1958 AND be in receipt of pension credit or a limited number of other benefits. Booking required. Let's Talk Peer Event Thursday 22 August, 10.30am - 2pm St. Mary’s Church, Upper Street, N1 2TX Let’s Talk is a relaxed, informal way to share information and to keep informed. As part of this month's session, as well as hearing from guest speakers providing information about local support services in Islington and the opportunity to get information and advice about benefits and housing issues, we're going to be coming together to take part in an opera singing workshop celebrating: football, the birth of Arsenal F.C., and also the community! Painting Appreciation Special Edition (online) Tuesday 27 August, 11am-12noon Guest Speaker, Amy, from the Royal Collection Trust will be providing an introduction to the Royal Collection. What do we mean by the ‘Royal Collection’? With over a million objects, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery and books, the Royal Collection is a unique record of the personal tastes of British kings and queens over the past 500 years. Carers Highbury History Walk Arsenal in Community Thursday 5 September, 10.30am - 12pm Meet outside Highbury and Islington station at 10.25am The walk is a history of the village of Highbury and its development from Roman times to the present day. The gentle walk will go through Highbury Corner, Highbury and Islington station, Highbury Fields and the Arsenal Stadium, Highbury. Please note there are no toilets along the route until Emirates Stadium. There is one flight of stairs to go up to the podium level of the stadium from Drayton Park. There is an alternative route which we will take if we have wheelchair users with us. Please note also that this is not a stadium tour. Health and Socialcare Fully Funded Skills Course Start date Mon 9 September Capital City College are now taking referrals for our Regents Park Centre classroom based 5-week Health and Social Care course. Learning hours are 10am till 2.30 pm Monday to Thursday. Learners will study for the Level 2 Certificate in Preparation to Work in Adult Health and Social Care, Level 2 Certificate “Mental Health Awareness within the Workplace” together with Employability Support with Guaranteed Job Interviews. Contingency planning and what to do if you are no longer able to care for someone (online) Wednesday 14 August, 1-2pm Carers UK is hosting a session focused on contingency planning and how you can prepare for a time when you might no longer be able to provide care. Friday 16 August (monthly sessions) Hugh Cubitt Community Centre, 48 Collier Street, N1 9QZ The club is designed for gentlemen aged 60 and over to come together once a month on a Friday to cook delicious healthy meals with our top chefs and then sit down and enjoy them in a friendly setting. Learn how to make delicious, comforting meals alongside your neighbours, then sit down and enjoy the food together. Cost of Living Event Thursday 22 August, 1-3.30pm Caxton House, 129 St John's Way, N19 3RQ Organised by Help on Your Doorstep, Octopus Community Centres and Age UK Islington, there will be practical help and advice about energy bills, debt and other issues, with support and information to take away. Hot food and refreshments will be available, plus some give-aways and pop-up health checks (blood pressure checks, diabetes risk assessments) and MMR vaccine clinic. No booking required, Islington residents can just come along on the day. Rehabit Community Recovery Programme for Drugs and Alcohol Rehabit is running two one-month community recovery programmes in Islington for those struggling with drugs and alcohol and who want to stop. The programmes will be a flexible combination of face-to-face and online sessions. The first will take place between 30 September – 25 October, and the second between 28 October – 22 November. There are 10 spaces for each monthly programme. Fight against Type 2 Diabetes in Islington with Boxercise Champions 4 Change Wellbeing C.I.C. Saturdays, 10.30 to 11.30am (£5 suggested donation) Claremont Project, White Lion Street, N1 9PD The programme aims to empower adults with or at risk of Type 2 Diabetes to improve their health and wellbeing through structured exercise based on non-contact boxing or boxercise.
Marie Curie Companion Service The Companion Service matches specially trained volunteers to support any residents of ten boroughs in North London living with a terminal or life-limiting illness. The volunteers provide up to 3 hours a week covering everything from companionship and a friendly ear, through to helping someone get to a doctor's appointment for example. This service is totally free and simply a way to help improve the lives of people at end-of-life, receiving palliative care, or living with a life-limiting illness. Care through music for those living with dementia Music Can is your resource to help you make music a part of personalised care for people living with dementia. It helps connect you to the music you want, in the ways you want to experience it. You can search for activities and find guides about how you can enhance care using music using things like playlists. You can also find music care providers near you. Carers Get Togethers and Events You can check upcoming events for Islington Carers on the Islington Carers Hub website. This also includes a link to the Age UK Islington weekly and monthly regular Get Togethers including social sports get togethers including dance fitness, Park Cuppas, online music appreciation and more.
Save the date in your diary also for a special Islington Dementia Event which is going to be taking place on Thursday 26 September, with the opportunity to meet and talk to local support services.
